Camping is a fun time for the whole family. It is a time to leave all of your troubles behind and reconnect with family and friends. Campfires, roasting marshmallows and sing-a-longs are the memories you’ll cherish for the rest of your life. That’s why it is essential to make your campsite a safe place for everyone.
The campsite you choose is your home away from home. It should be a clean, safe place that is devoid of any debris or low-hanging limbs. And, choosing a site that is flat and level makes it easier to set up camp and park your RV.
Once you’ve chosen the perfect campsite, there are a few safety precautions to keep in mind while setting up camp. The following tips can go a long way to ensure that you and your family have a memorable camping experience.
• Check for potential hazards. Be sure to check the site thoroughly for glass, sharp objects, branches, large ant beds, poison ivy, bees and hazardous terrain.
• Inspect the site. Look for a level site with enough room to spread out all your gear. Also, a site that has trees or shrubs on the side of prevailing winds will help block strong, unexpected gusts.
• Build fires in a safe area. Your open fires and fuel-burning appliances must be far enough away from the tent to prevent ignition from sparks, flames and heat. Never use a flame or any other heating device inside a tent. Use a flashlight or battery-powered light instead.
• Make sure your fires are always attended. Be sure you have an area for a fire that cannot spread laterally or vertically - a grill or stone surface is ideal. When putting the fire out, drown it with water, making sure all embers, coals and sticks are wet.
• Dispose of trash properly. Remember to recycle - use the proper recycling bins if available.
• Watch out for bugs. Avoid attracting stinging insects by wearing light-colored clothing and avoiding perfumes or colognes.
• Beware when encountering wildlife. To ward off bears, keep your campsite clean, and do not leave food, garbage, coolers, cooking equipment or utensils out in the open. Remember that bears are potentially dangerous and unpredictable - never feed or approach a bear. Use a flashlight at night - many animals feed at night and the use of a flashlight may warn them away.
• Beware of poisonous plants. Familiarize yourself with any dangerous plants that are common to the area. If you come into contact with a poisonous plant, immediately rinse the affected area with water and apply a soothing lotion, such as calamine, to the affected area.

It’s hard to believe but Fall has arrived. We can tell it by the temperature drops we have been experiencing for the past few days in Jeffersonville, IN. Our crews have already started winterizing our inventory and it is a good time for you to start thinking about it too.
Yes, there are a number of good weeks to camp remaining but it never hurts to have the supplies on hand. Really cold nights could start sneaking in on us before we know it.
Whatever you do please don’t forget to check your roof and wall seams! Since this Ike has blown through we have done lots of estimates for people who sustained damage and even have tsome who tried to blame wall delamination and old wood rot on the storm. Nope folks, a storm doesn’t cause these issues in the space of a few days, lack of maintenance does! We all have caulking on and in our homes and we know we have to tend to it or there will be problems. Caulking that slips by and gets away from you can develope hairline cracks and great big ones that will start leaking which can cause thousands of dollars in damage. An hours worth of work and usually less than $50 in materials is all it takes to prevent this. If you are unsure of what should be looked for call your dealer and schedule a service appointment. Insurance and warranty do not cover maintenance issues… those repair expenses come out of your pocket.
It’s probably not a bad idea to get those ugly black streaks off your RV before bedding her down for the winter. Getting them off now will save some elbow grease next spring. I mean, come on, you wash and wax your car don’t you? In most cases you paid just as much, or more, for your RV. Take some time, use some TLC and she will more than likely be around when your vehicle is rotting in the junk yard.

When winterizing your RV please DO NOT use regular automotive anti-freeze! As silly as it may sound, we have found this to be a common occurance with folks that are new to camping and the RV Industry in general.
RV winterization requires special non-toxic anti-freeze and we recommend you use a brand that is guaranteed to 50 degrees below zero such as the one listed at the below link.
Make sure your holding tanks and water heater are drained before the freezing temperatures arrive! Should you get caught off guard lighting the furnace and opening cabinet doors usually works for a one night freeze. Hopefully you won’t get caught off guard with an extend time of cold temperatures. Watch your local weather and if they are calling for multiple days of cold weather; WINTERIZE!
Refer to your Jayco Owners Manual for instructions on winterizing your unit. Manuals can be downloaded for most models from 1973-Present on this website.
If you own a newer model Jayco more than likely you already have a water heater bypass kit installed. These kits are relatively inexpensive, easy to install and help make winterizing easier and less expensive. Here’s a link you can use to order a bypass kit for your RV:
